Relationship Building
56) Sending encouragement to the class before, during and after class (power kid meme)
57) Sending links to cultural events in your area. It's great because they can click on the link and research the event and share futher information with their friends or the class.
58) Student posts picture of a strange cultural phenomenon they don't understand or a food they don't recognise (including eg in the Asian supermarket!!!) and classmates respond with ideas
75) Sister class- find a class of a similar level (or not) in your school. They could test each other on anything they've been learning.
76) Sister class- class A sends photos of themselves to the class B, who write descriptions. These are sent back to class A, (without naming the person who is being described) who then have to decide which of their classmates is being described.
77) Pen (Whatsapp) pals – Does your school have different campuses? Why not set up an interschool chat between classes of a similar level?! If they’re studying the same material, that could dovetail nicely into some intercampus competition or collaboration.
-introduce yourselves with a photo and short bio.
-describe an object and the other students have to guess what it is. Just the idea of physical distance creates more interest.
-request a photo-students in brisbane ask sydney students to send them a photo or video of their classroom and or teacher. Then even their textbook page or notebook/brainstorming page after it's completed to compare notes!!
-describe and discuss city, cost of living, standards of accommodation, nightlife, what they're learning.
-out and about- students go on a walking tour of their area and send photos and descriptions to their pen pal classmates.
-you could have a vocab competition between classes
-collaboratively write a story over the course of a week. This could, of course, happen inside and outside classtime!
78) accidental revision. It’s a good idea to post both valuable, meaty stuff AND photos/videos on there so they find themselves wanting to scroll back to look at stuff. And what happens when they do? They encounter all that lovely vocabulary and activate their memory/revise their vocab. getting them to go back through their message stream is cheeky forced revision!
79) one student sent me photos of their new work uniform. After completing a CAE, this keen student got a job as a flight attendant and started their new life. Being able to share that moment with them was pricless (for both of us) #soproud
